Hansaka Ranaweera
Hansaka is a junior barrister at Thorndon Chambers. He assists barristers at Thorndon Chambers with legal research, drafting pleadings and submissions, reviewing evidence, and court appearances. He is interested in all areas of litigation.
Before joining Thorndon Chambers, Hansaka clerked for Justice Ellen France in the Supreme Court of New Zealand, working on a range of civil and criminal issues.
Hansaka graduated from the University of Otago with an LLB(Hons)(first class) and a BA in Politics. He received the Otago District Law Society prize (awarded for showing general excellence throughout the degree) and was recognised as the top undergraduate student in the humanities division. He also finished first or first equal in papers such as public law, company law, property law, criminal law, tax law and treaty politics. During his time at university, Hansaka clerked for two large law firms, worked as a research assistant and tutor for the law faculty, and twice represented Otago in national negotiation competitions.
